TELLEIN [521]
The village of El-Tellein was included in the Friedman-Buck survey of 1992. The investigators spoke to several villagers, and one of whom pointed out a place in the street near the centre of town where a granite statue, purported to be of Ramses II, had been recovered and taken to the Zagazig Museum many years ago. Within the same general vicinity they were also shown three octagonal column fragments about a meter long and 0.30m in diameter, three limestone column bases, an octagonal pier capital and one granite block with a square hole in the center. None of the blocks appeared to be inscribed. There was also a small limestone statue fragment, perhaps a human left shoulder and part of the arm. No pottery was noted. The site appears on the Description map as Telleineh. The SCA registered site of Kafr ed-Deir is just north of Tellein, and some of the antiquities in the latter town could have been brought from there. See EES no. 000.
