Earlier name Tell es-Sabaa Banat. A sandy gezira with Predynasric and Early Dynastic cemeteries. Munich survey of 1966 and major excavations in 1970s - 80s. Much bibliography. The area of the site includes the outlying mounds Tell el-Mahgar (No. 206), Tell Tamlikh (No. 207: 16 feddan in 1966) and Tell Zinein (No. 208). Petrie in 1885 noted some Late Roman surface remains (unpublished sketch-map and notes inserted into volume, Tanis I, at Edwards Library, University College London).
