MESK, K. EL-  [600]

Surveyed and mapped in 2004 by a team led by Penny Wilson, who reported as follows:

Kom Misk is a small mound, rising a maximum of 8m,  with a modern cemetery upon it. The surface is loose powdery dark brown earth, with some pottery and red brick. It wasn’t clear if this is anclent brick or from more recent tombs which have fallen into disrepair. There is a large tomb on the summit of the mound which was built in 1960 for Ibrahim el Sawy but is now falling into ruin. The outlying area of the site is flat with a track around it. This flatter area is about 1m above the level of the fields surrounding the site. The fields were checked for pottery but there did not seem to be an extension of the tell in this direction. The surface pottery was Late Roman.

Photographs of the site from a larger collection, taken by Penny Wilson in 2004. Copies of the others are kept at the EES London Office.
