KORTAS, K. [16]

Tested by Hamada & Farid in 1940s - found some early Greek pottery of 6th C BC. ARCE Naukratis survey with comments in the Naukratis publication. Directions to the site on p.77. Site low and sandy. Single test pit produced Ptolemaic sherds. Other sherds collected by Americans were Roman, down to 7thC AD. The SCA undertook investigations in 2002 and 2003, directed by Hisham Nahmen Atallah and Fawzia Rabia Ahmed Nasef. The resulting Arabic report depicts brick kilns, a well and rectangular brick structures.

Satellite imagery of 2006 shows the mound entirely covered by rows of small pits, possibly SCA test-trenches in advance of relinquishing the site. There are no modern buildings on the mound but the straight edge at the east suggests the fields have advanced. To view in Google EarthTM, click the logo
