KAFR HAMMAM [646]
Visited by the EES Delta Survey expedition led by Joanne Rowland, 2006 season: There are two cemeteries in the village, 50m apart, and the majority of the archaeological finds are concentrated on the large mound, about 8m high and 60m in diameter. Excavations were carried out by the SCA for six seasons, finishing in 2000.
The cemetery on the high kom has a large excavation trench on the northern side and the ceramics seen here appear to be Late Roman to Early Islamic. There is extensive brickwork in the trench, some of which looks similar to Roman hypocaust systems. The ground is covered with ceramic sherds. On the east side of the mound there appears to be a piece of a ceramic, probably Roman, coffin coming out of the side. Pottery is only found on this cemetery mound, and to a much lesser extent on the second cemetery mound, but not in the rest of the village. The fields next to the second cemetery contain a number of diagnostic sherds and on the northern side of this cemetery some pottery was observed in the section.
