IBWAN, T. [547]
Site located just east of El-Hagga. Now called Tell Ibwan - visited by J and P Spencer in 1997: a large, low mound clear of vegetation, in reclaimed land on edge of Lake Menzala. E side of tell cut through by two new canals, with sherds, bricks and stone blocks dredged up. Surface of most of site very dusty and salty with few visible sherds. Some Roman pieces noted, as well as glass fragments and fired bricks. Large sandy area at the east side. Largest part of tell is clear of any modern structures and flat, on other side of new canal is another part, occupied by factory buildings.
Access (best) by the road along the south side of El-Salam canal from Damietta, then off to the right down a steep dirt-track to a dirt road which leads directly to the site.Beyond reclamed land to the east are two more tells, called either Naggarein, or individually T. Hagarein and T. Shawaqfa. Perhaps once all one mound with Ibwan.
