DILINGAT, K. [21]
Noted by American Naukratis project. Inscription of Ptolemy IV from here, loc.cit. According to Arabic News reports, in 2002 the SCA excavated several burial mounds and found sarcophagi (date not indicated). Neal Spencer reported in 2003 the following: 'Not visited. Inspector Ahmed Kamal stated that he excavated the site around 1986. Excavations were only possible in ground between houses. Finds included double amphorae child-burials and amulets, described as late Roman'. Satellite imagery of 2007 shows the site as a very small mound on the south side of a road running SE from Dilingat town, with some modern buildings on the flattened south-eastern end. South of the mounds are cultivated fields; to the west a dirt-track separates the site from more fields and some houses which line the road. Other remains of mounds are visible on the edges of the town, particularly on the east and south sides. These remnants are all that remain of the large mound shown on the Survey of Egypt 1:100,000 (1916) map.
