noted walls of small mud bricks in 1913 which he thought were Ptolemaic.
Friedman and Buck survey in 1992 report that the site seems to be founded
on a gezira and consists of a low mound no more than 2-3 meters higher
than the surrounding fields, which are at an elevation of about 6.5m asl.
It is occupied by a modern cemetery with perhaps 70 recent tombs and several
older graves composed of crumbling mud brick. Sebakh is being taken from
the mound, especially from the west side. Pottery observed on the surface
was mostly Roman, but there was some OK material. In recent cutting for
sebakh or graves, more OK sherds were seen, including several from red-polished
bowls (Meidum-bowls). Access to the site is from the road between Diarb
Nigm and Zagazig, 2km WNW of village of Ikwa. |
