| Italian survey 1987-8:
Isolated sand gezira, extensively disturbed by sand diggers, partly covered
by Islamic cemetery. Some Archaic but mostly GR pottery and graves. Tested
by SCA in 1990: Roman cemetery on west side of mound, with brick graves
1.5m below the surface. Roman terra sigillata, bowls of red slip ware and
black burnished ware, amphorae, cooking pots etc. Some brown and yellow
ware. The 1:25,000 map co-ordinates given by Fattovich should be corrected
to 909.7N 666E. Satellite imagery (2006) shows the mound clear of structures
at the north end, but covered by modern tombs at the south and crossed
by a dirt road. Edges cut straight by advance of the fields. |
