Bendariya

Archaeological site, cut by agriculture and partly overbuilt by a modern cemetery. The extent of the original larger mound shows in the field-pattern. The site is 25 feddans in size, and once rose to a height of 10m. Most of the remains date from the Late Roman - Coptic Period. Excavations were carried out annually by the local inspectorate from 1970 to 2003, revealing Coptic burials. The oldest pottery is Coptic and Islamic in date. Many terracotta statues of Bes have been found, also granite and basalt weights and bronze coins, inscribed in Greek and also Turkish. Egypt Exploration Society Delta Survey no. 306.
